AI Writing and the Illusion of Progress →

Writer

Darius Foroux

Summary

Darius reflects on his experience using AI writing tools like Jasper AI and ChatGPT, initially seduced by their promises of saving time and boosting productivity. However, he soon realized relying too heavily on AI made him intellectually lazy, causing him to read less and outsource his thinking. The editing process for AI-generated content was arduous, often requiring fact-checking and extensive revisions to add depth and human insight. Darius warns that overreliance on AI can lead to a collective echo chamber and erode critical thinking skills, proposing that the real value lies in embracing the writing process itself as a means of personal growth and problem-solving.

I had a solid writing process before ChatGPT came onto the scene in 2022. I can't say I've been more productive as a writer since. AI has helped me get off the dreaded blank white page and it has unlocked different forms of creative expression, but I'm not significantly better because of it. I've taken two steps forward and one step backward. AI has helped me in many ways, but it has made me lazy in others.
