The Threat to WordPress That No One Is Talking About →

Writer

James Brooks

Summary

James attended a WordPress conference (WCUS) and was struck by the lack of Gen Z attendees. Analyzing the data, he found that under 25s accounted for less than 3% of attendees, with an average age around 38 and a strong male skew. He questions whether WordPress is becoming irrelevant for younger generations, who often turn to TikTok and social media for information rather than websites. Alternatively, WordPress may not be user-friendly enough for Gen Z, or the community has failed to cater to their needs and showcase young creators in the space. James invites a dialogue on why Gen Z seems disengaged with WordPress and how to address this potential existential threat.

The numbers don't lie. I'm 37 and wouldn't even think to use Wordpress for anything these days. If I were 27 or 17, I might not even know what Wordpress is.
